The Los Angeles Rams have been forced to face the financial consequences of their aggressive spending in recent years. That included having to release Todd Gurley to save cap space after his production has declined.
There is no denying Gurley’s importance to the Rams since being drafted 10th overall in the 2015 NFL Draft. He was named AP Offensive Rookie of the Year during the team’s final season in St. Louis and provided great hope for the franchise starting in a new market.
The 2017 season was the start of Gurley’s dominance but the window was short-lived. He racked up an incredible 3,924 yards from scrimmage and 40 combined touchdowns in 29 appearances from 2017-18. His presence was pivotal in the Rams making a run at a Super Bowl appearance.
It’s clear that Gurley wasn’t as effective last season as he was in recent years. He averaged just 3.8 yards per carry and saw his rush attempts and targets significantly decrease. Those factors naturally resulted in a significant decline in his volume output in key categories.
With that being said, there are three questions the Rams face after deciding to release Todd Gurley.
