Give Tyrod Taylor competition
The Chargers are currently projected to roll with Tyrod Taylor as their starting quarterback based on their roster construction. Adding Cam Newton into the mix would help provide Taylor with needed competition to bring the best out of the position.
While Taylor does a great job of keeping his interceptions down (career 1.5% INT%), he’s simply an underwhelming overall player. He threw for for just 8,857 passing yards and 51 touchdowns in 44 appearances during his three-season stretch with the Buffalo Bills as a starting quarterback.
It’s difficult to believe that Taylor has improved so much that he’s going to be a more dynamic player. Unless the Chargers truly believe the offensive firepower they have can flip a switch for him, it’s best to give a more intriguing overall player like Newton a chance to show he’s healthy again.
