Denzel Mims, Baylor

One of the main wide receivers that have improved his draft stock the most is Denzel Mims out of Baylor. He put together a strong performance at the NFL Scouting Combine and when coupled with his measurements, it’s easy to see why that’s the case.

Lance Zierlein of NFL.com pointed out the great physical intangibles Mims brings to the table and how he thrives in the red-zone. However, there are legitimate limitations to his skill-set like his ability to succeed against press coverage and in jump ball situations.

Mims is a long-striding outside target with excellent height, weight and speed and an insane catch-radius. He’s a touchdown threat anytime he’s near the red zone, with the focus and body control to finesse and finish catches above the rim. He struggles to release and separate from physical press corners, and he doesn’t consistently compete and outwork opponents for positioning on contested catches. If the route work and intensity catch up with his natural athletic ability, he could become a dangerous “Z” receiver in a vertical offense, but the floor might be lower than some teams are comfortable with.

The 2019 campaign from Baylor was truly impressive and Mims played a pivotal role in that. Last season, he racked up an impressive 66 receptions, 1,020 receiving yards, and 12 touchdowns in 13 appearances. His statistical output boosted his draft stock and rightfully so.

Mims stands at 6’3″, weighs 207 lbs, has 33 7/8″ arms, and has 9 3/8″ hands. His on-field resulted featured a 4.38 on the 40-yard dash, 6.66 on the three-cone drill, and 4.43 on the 20-yard shuttle. He also did 16 reps on the bench press and had a 38.5″ vertical jump and 131.0″ broad jump.

If the Broncos are seeking a big red-zone threat, Denzel Mims would be a logical option. The main issue is that his inability to beat press coverage and win jump ball situations makes it tough to necessarily put him above some of the other potential options with the No. 15 pick.
