Buccaneers’ Chris Godwin speaks out on switching number for Tom Brady

A lot has been discussed about whether or not former New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady will continue to wear No. 12 as his jersey number with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. There is on potential obstacle; it’s already taken by Chris Godwin

The topic of potentially switching jersey numbers came up when ESPN’s “NFL Live” had Godwin on the broadcast. He noted that he’s ‘very passionate’ about wearing No. 12 but he understands if Brady wants it then he’ll ‘have to defer to him.’

“My phone has been blowing up non-stop on all my socials, texts and calls. Everybody wants to know the same thing,” Godwin said on ESPN’s “NFL Live” on Friday. “But for me I’m very passionate about the number, it’s something I’ve been wearing it since I was in high school but at the end of the day, if he doesn’t want it then I’ll keep it.

“But if he does, out of respect for everything he’s accomplished and everything that he’s done I will kinda have to defer to him. He’s the G.O.A.T., you know. If he’s willing to give it up, perfect but if he’s not, then I guess we’ll cross that bridge when we get there.”

Chris Godwin has done more than enough to earn respect racking up 86 catches, 1,333 yards, and nine touchdowns last season. He has become the perfect complement to Mike Evans and as a duo, they were likely a key contributing factor in Brady’s decision to come to the Buccaneers.

It will be fascinating to see how the Tom Brady era unfold in Tampa Bay. There are still a handful of positions the Buccaneers still need to address to be prepared to make a lengthy playoff run. They still have the NFL Draft to get it done but will need to capitalize.
