Giants: 3 worst-case scenarios for New York in 2020

3. Giants Miss on Another Tackle

The Giants have needed a tackle for many years now. They have not been able to find one and they have looked in many places.

It all began in 2015 when New York selected Ereck Flowers out of Miami with the ninth-overall pick. Flowers quickly showed that he is a complete liability. He started 46 games for the Giants over three years and never seemed to put it together. Flowers spent 2019 with the Washington Redskins and landed a three-year, $30 million deal with the Miami Dolphins in free agency. Good for him, but his time with the Giants will always be viewed as a disaster.

Nate Solder was a staple on the offensive line of the New England Patriots for quite some time. The Giants decided to give the 32-year old left tackle a four-year, $62 million contract. That is a deal they immediately regret. New York has since restructured Solder’s contract to free up cap space.

The Giants are hoping that the third time is a charm. New York selected Andrew Thomas out of Georgia with the fourth-overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. This pick shocked some fans but that has been the nature of Dave Gettleman.

The Giants desperately need Thomas to be a player that is around for awhile. Anytime a player is taken in the top-five, there is pressure to succeed, but especially on a team that has swung and missed on tackles in recent memory.
