Aside from the big guys up front, Douglas also added some solid pieces for Darnold to throw to next season. Although, losing Robby Anderson wasn’t ideal, Douglas was able to mitigate the loss with the addition of a few new toys.
The team drafted wideout Denzel Mims out of Baylor, who should be a stellar red zone threat from day one. The team also added veteran wideout Breshad Perriman, a speedy receiver who has developed consistent hands over the past few seasons.
Perriman’s deep threat ability, coupled with Mims big body and ability to pluck the ball out of the air should more than make up for the loss of Anderson.
While all of these additions are nice and will surely help the team in 2020, the level of success the Jets see this season hinges mostly on Darnold and head coach Adam Gase. Gase was the last coach to take the Miami Dolphins to the playoffs, and while he’s been racking up mediocre seasons since then, there’s reason for optimism in 2020.
Darnold is the best talent Gase has worked with at the quarterback position in some time, probably since he was the offensive coordinator for Peyton Manning. If injuries don’t plague this team like they did last season, the Jets will be right there in the thick of things in the AFC playoff race.
