Why the Seahawks signing Carlos Hyde will pay major dividends

Since Pete Carroll took over as head coach for the Seattle Seahawks he has brought a specific identity. His style of coaching brings a stout defensive unit and a smash-mouth running attack.

It’s no secret anymore, they will run the ball with regularity and that’s why adding another running back into the mix was a wise decision by the Seahawks front office.

Last Friday, Seattle signed veteran running back Carlos Hyde to a one-year contract, which could be worth up to $4 million in incentives.

Last year, the Seahawks running game was nothing short of its usual self as they carried the ball effectively with Chris Carson and Rashaad Penny but ultimately, both sustained injuries down the stretch run into the playoffs.

The Seahawks were forced to turn towards a familiar face as they signed Marshawn Lynch out of retirement on a one-year deal last season because the running back room became so banged up.

Now after singing Hyde this offseason, they find themselves in good company entering the 2020 season with two running backs who are coming off back-to-back 1,000 yard seasons.

Having depth at an injury-prone position like running back is always a positive. The Seahawks running backs are violent rushers, causing them to often breakdown later in the year. Having multiple guys who can take volume touches will help the rotation of rushers stay more fluent.

Chris Carson was brilliant last year but he showed signs of deteriorating later on in the year. Having another rusher to lean on with Hyde should do wonders for both running backs as they can stay fresh throughout the 16 game season

Hyde played in all 16 regular-season games, plus two in the playoffs. He handled a career-high 245 carries last season and still showed the ability to carry the load while playing at a high level.

Another big component for the Seahawks is that Carson and Hyde compliment each other extraordinarily well. They offer two different styles of play so that should set them up for several different looks when the opposing defense disguises their look.

Hyde is better suited to take handoffs out of the shotgun. His nimble feet and lateral footwork allow him to adjust accordingly.

Whereas Carson has thrived most when Russell Wilson is under center as he can generate momentum before throwing his bruising running style into the line of scrimmage. He’s a downhill runner who is likely to take the majority of touches out of the I-formation.

Carlos Hyde and Chris Carson now project as the best running back tandem the Seahawks have had since Wilson broke into the league in 2012.
