Houston is hoping that Ryans can bring stability to a position that they have had four different people in, including interim head coaches, the last three years. The Texans had set an embarrassing precedent with how they handled things and Ryans is here to help get things back on track.

Ryans and general manager Nick Caserio have put together a game plan to help get things rolling in the right direction. They know this is a multi-year job, but you have to start somewhere. This offseason, the team brought in respected veterans to help elevate the floor while selecting what they hope are franchise pillars in the 2023 NFL Draft.

With the No. 2 overall pick, the Texans selected Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud. They then made a bold move, acquiring the No. 3 pick from the Arizona Cardinals to select Alabama pass rusher, Will Anderson Jr. It was certainly risky trading away a 2024 first-round pick, as the Texans could very easily be inside the top-10 again. But, if Stroud and Anderson pan out, no one will remember the price they paid.

So, what remains to be done for the Texans this offseason? In the opinion of ESPN NFL insider Field Yates, the one move that remains to be done is working out a contract extension with right tackle, Tytus Howard.

“Houston has been busy this offseason. It checked the most important roster box by drafting quarterback C.J. Stroud at No. 2 overall, but it also made a slew of free agent moves (many of the one-year variety) to plug other gaps for new coach DeMeco Ryans. Howard is the team’s most deserving extension candidate as he enters the final year of his rookie deal and has helped to form the strength of the roster in recent seasons: the tackle duo. There are many factors that contribute to success for young quarterbacks, but having a stable offensive line is among the most critical.”

Having a player of Howard’s caliber at right tackle is a luxury, not many teams have. He combines with star left tackle Laremy Tunsil to make arguably the best tandem in the NFL. Stroud will benefit from having such a strong foundation blocking in front of him.

An emphasis has been made on the offensive line this offseason. A few months ago, the Texans acquired Shaq Mason from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to bolster the interior of their unit. In 2022, their first-round pick was used on the versatile Kenyon Green out of Texas A&M.

Stroud will take some time to develop but the Texans have taken the necessary steps to ensure the process can go as smoothly as possible. In addition to the offensive line upgrades, veterans Devin Singletary, Robert Woods and Dalton Schultz were signed in free agency to elevate the offensive skill positions.

The Houston Texans have been one of the more active teams in the NFL this offseason. They got things started very early on, firing head coach Lovie Smith and hiring San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator, and former Texans standout linebacker, DeMeco Ryans to take over.
