The Dallas Cowboys have gotten off to a 3-1 start this season and are coming off of a masterful 38-3 win over the New England Patriots this past weekend.
The Cowboys are clearly one of the best teams in football and are certainly in contention for a Super Bowl title this season, but owner Jerry Jones may want to get aggressive and add a piece or two to the roster ahead of the Oct. 31 NFL trade deadline.
One realistic target for Dallas is Arizona Cardinals tight end Zach Ertz.
The Cardinals are just 1-3 and appear to be headed for another rebuild, and with Ertz being 32 years old going on 33, he probably does not factor much into the club’s future.
Ertz actually has another year left on his three-year, $31.65 million deal, so trading him would also free up a bit more money for Arizona going into the offseason.
The Cowboys could certainly use a tight end, as that is one area that has plagued the team for quite some time now. While Ertz is not the same Pro Bowl-caliber pass-catcher from his days with the Philadelphia Eagles, he remains a reliable weapon and would represent a great addition to Dallas’ aerial attack.
Ertz has shown this year that he still has great hands, logging 20 catches for 136 yards through the first four weeks of the season. He also surely wouldn’t be too expensive and would probably only cost the Cowboys a mid-round draft pick.
Dallas has a good offense, but not a great one. The club ranks 11th in the NFL in total yardage, and its passing attack ranks a mediocre 14th. Sure, the Cowboys have CeeDee Lamb and some decent options like Brandin Cooks, Michael Gallup and Jalen Tolbert behind him, but again, they lack a tight end.
Ertz would instantly open up the Cowboys’ passing game and would provide Dak Prescott with a security blanket on short and intermediate routes.
