1 Rough Stat Has Broncos As Worst Team Over Last 10 Years

It is not a stretch to call the Denver Broncos the most disappointing team in the NFL for the 2022 season. After winning seven games last season despite some woes at the quarterback position, many people believed if the Broncos were able to make an upgrade there that they would become Super Bowl contenders.

Denver made a splash in the offseason, acquiring Russell Wilson from the Seattle Seahawks in exchange for a package that included five draft picks and three players. On top of that, the Broncos signed him to an extension worth $245 million.

Wilson was expected to elevate an offense that had some very good talent on it, but that has not occurred. Wilson is having the worst season of his career while the Seahawks are thriving under the leadership of Geno Smith.

The Broncos have looked discombobulated from the start as head coach Nathaniel Hackett looks to be in way over his head. That has led to some truly ugly performances offensively despite Hackett being an offensive head coach. Some major changes are going to be needed this offseason, especially if things continue in this fashion to close out the season.

Right now, the Broncos are averaging only 13.83 points per game. According to NFL on CBS, that is the fewest points per game by a team in the last 10 seasons. Rounding out the top four are the Los Angeles Rams in 2016 with 14, the Arizona Cardinals in 2018 with 14.06 and the 2017 Cleveland Browns with 14.63.

All three of the teams on that list other than the Broncos were led by rookies during the seasons that landed on that list. The Rams had Jared Goff, the Cardinals had Josh Rosen and the Browns had Deshone Kizer.

Arizona and Cleveland both landed the No. 1 overall pick as a result of their ineptitude, selecting Kyler Murray and Baker Mayfield, respectively. Denver will have no such benefit from a bad season as their first-round pick is owned by the Seahawks, who will have an opportunity to add an impact player to their roster that is challenging for a playoff spot.

Had the Broncos’ offense been below average and scored 18 points per game, instead of being the worst offense in the NFL, they would be among the best teams in the NFL with a 10-2 record. The defense deserves a ton of credit for what they have accomplished this season despite getting zero support from the offense.
