The New Orleans Saints defense had an up-and-down season in 2019. They started off hot, allowing 10 or fewer points in three of their first eight games. But then things went south in the latter half of the season, especially for New Orleans’ pass defense.
One of the main culprits for the team’s lack luster pass defense, was corner back Eli Apple. The former first-round pick, like the rest of the Saints defense, started the season off with a bang, but his level of play faded as the year went on.
The Saints eventually brought in veteran corner Janoris Jenkins to play ahead of Apple once he got benched at the end of the year.
With Apple set to become an unrestricted free agent this offseason, it’s easy to see why many believe he’ll be gone. His inconsistencies are glaring, but with his young age and potential, the Saints may end up bringing him back on a one-year “prove it” deal.
Here are two huge reasons New Orleans should look to retain Eli Apple this offseason.
