He Likely Won’t Cost Much to Retain
Before the 2019 season, Griffen re-worked his contract with the Vikings, adding a clause that if he got six sacks it would void the last year of his deal and he’d become free agent. He totaled eight sacks last season, therefore, his contract is up.
Griffen has stated that he wants to remain a Viking, telling the Minneapolis Star Tribune, “I love this team. I love this organization. They took great care of me when I needed it the most. I want to be a Viking.”
With Griffen openly saying he wants to stay in Minnesota, there’s no reason to think he won’t sign a team friendly deal to stay in purple and gold.
At 32 years of age, teams won’t be chomping at the bit to sign Griffen either, making a return to Minnesota all the more likely.
It won’t take much out of the Vikings front office to lure Griffen back, so we’ll have to see how it plays out once free agency rolls around.
