Quinton Dunbar
With free agency rapidly approaching, the 49ers currently have just $17.8 million in cap space available, according to Spotrac. Given their limited cap situation, San Francisco will likely add a corner that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg.
Of course, the most cost-effective option is to select a cornerback in the upcoming draft. At the same time, there is a cornerback that could be had via trade that shouldn’t be overly expensive.
Not too long ago, Quinton Dunbar asked to be released or traded from the Washington Redskins despite Ron Rivera coming to town. Dunbar, a receiver-turned-cornerback, has evolved into a vital piece to Washington’s secondary in recent seasons.
In his first season starting in more than 10 games, Dunbar recorded 37 tackles, eight deflections, and a career-high four interceptions in 2019. Aside from Sherman, the 49ers currently deploy Ahkello Witherspoon and Emmanuel Moseley at cornerback.
There’s no doubt that Dunbar would be an upgrade over what the 49ers have at cornerback. Above all, Dunbar could likely be had at a reasonable price in a trade with the Redskins.
