Ramsey is a Perfect Fit For the Vikings
While Jalen Ramsey is good enough to play in any scheme, he fits the Vikings defensive scheme perfectly. Minnesota’s defense was at its best when Xavier Rhodes was playing as a shutdown man corner. While obviously no team plays one specific scheme, to this point both the Rams and Jaguars have favored zone coverage over man.
While it is important to be diverse, Jalen is at his best in man coverage when he is physical with opposing receivers. The Vikings love using physical corners to stop the run, play press coverage and cover the flats in Cover 2.
With Jalen playing tight physical coverage, it will force receivers to adjust their routes. This would mess with the timing of opposing quarterbacks throwing to receivers. Due to the miscommunications and the differences in timing, opposing quarterbacks will turn the ball over.
Jalen Ramsey does a great job disguising coverage as well. This will force even more turnovers and lead to more offensive opportunities. Check out how NFL Network analyst Brian Baldinger breaks down Ramsey’s ability to disguise his coverage then break on the ball in this interception from 2018.
Ramsey’s athletic ability and knowledge of the game allow for defensive coordinators to get very creative. While he fits any defensive scheme, placing him in Minnesota with a defensive-minded head coach who gets the very best out of his players defensively would be perfect.
