3 Cornerbacks The Cowboys Should Pursue In NFL Free Agency

The Dallas Cowboys won double-digit games in back-to-back seasons for the first time since their streak from 1991-1996. Despite the strong performances, there is a sense of disappointment still in Dallas as their Divisional Round losing streak reached seven games.

If they want to get over the hump in 2023, there are a few areas on the roster that could use some improvement. Adding another weapon offensively has been the focus, but if Dallas really wants to make strides, they need to continue reshaping the defense.

Dan Quinn has done a wonderful job turning things around after Mike McCarthy’s first season was historically poor on the defensive side of the ball. To continue improving on that side of the ball, the team could use an upgrade at the cornerback spot.

Trevor Diggs has been a star and Daron Bland was also solid. But, beyond those two, the depth is lacking. Who could the Cowboys target to fill that void? Here are three cornerbacks that Dallas should pursue in free agency.

3. Jonathan Jones

The Cowboys seem to have the perimeter locked down with Diggs and Bland handling the job there. But, adding some capable depth behind them certainly wouldn’t hurt. If the Cowboys can achieve that while upgrading in the slot, they should jump at the opportunity.

Jonathan Jones is one player that could fill that need for the Dallas defense. He was a very good slot receiver with the New England Patriots before moving outside for the first time in his career. Things started off extraordinarily well in 2022 on the perimeter but Jones eventually had some regression.

While the second half of the season was underwhelming, Jones at least proved he has the versatility to play inside and out, which is valuable. Depending on needs and weekly matchups, Jones can line up all over the formation.

2. Jamel Dean

The Cowboys know that a big money deal for Diggs is right around the corner. He is eligible for an extension this year heading into the final season of his rookie deal. If he doesn’t sign a deal this offseason, Dallas could place the franchise tag on him.

Knowing what lies ahead, they may not want to commit a big contract to another cornerback. But, if they decide to really lock down the perimeter and pair Diggs with another excellent player, Jamel Dean could be on their list of targets.

Dean is in line for a massive contract this offseason and will have a robust market as the top cornerback option. He has been productive in his career, registering a grade of 75 every season of his career thus far. Adding him to the mix would take pressure off of Diggs and make the secondary a real strength of the Cowboys.

1. Cam Sutton

The Pittsburgh Steelers’ secondary had some struggles during the 2022 season, which was partly due to the fact that T.J. Watt missed such a large portion of the season. But, one of the bright spots was Cam Sutton.

This past season was only Sutton’s second as a full-time starter and he played at a high level. He earned a 71 coverage grade and gave up only 411 receiving yards, which was the ninth fewest of anyone with at least 400 coverage snaps.

Sutton has immense value given the versatility that he possesses. He is more than capable of handling duties on the perimeter but also has the skill set to play in the slot as well. Given their needs depth-wise and in the slot, Sutton makes for an ideal fit for the Cowboys in free agency.
