Could finish No. 2 on the team in receptions
Without a doubt, the Steelers would prefer Smith-Schuster revert back to being the undisputed No. 1 wide receiver in their offense. After Smith-Schuster, it will be interesting to see how Pittsburgh elects to deploy the rest of their receiving corps.
However, seeing that Claypool was taken with Pittsburgh’s first draft pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, it’s evident that he’ll be featured immediately. Provided that, it’s currently safe to assume that Claypool will slot in at the No. 2 wide receiver position — as Smith-Schuster once did when Brown was with the team.
In his second season in the NFL, Smith-Schuster hauled in 111 receptions for 1,426 yards and seven touchdowns. Again, that was when Brown was an All-Pro wideout and causing defenses to focus on him. While he likely won’t have 111 receptions as Smith-Schuster did, Claypool could very well be No. 2 on the team in receptions in 2020.
