3 Early NFL Free Agency Targets For The Indianapolis Colts

Chris Ballard and the Indianapolis Colts are fresh off of a brutal loss in Week 18 against the Jacksonville Jaguars. The loss eliminated them from playoff contention and put an end to what was a rough all-around year. Now, the franchise must turn their attention to the upcoming NFL offseason.

The only way for the Colts to become the Super Bowl contenders that many believed they could be this season is to improve the roster. Is Carson Wentz the long-term guy at quarterback? No one knows, but it seems likely that he will stick around for at least one more season due to Indianapolis giving up a first-round pick to get him.

Instead of focusing on the quarterback position, the Colts must look to shore up the positions around the QB. They also will need to add a piece or two to their defensive secondary. The Colts are in for a very busy offseason.

Let’s dive in and take a look at three early NFL free agency targets that the Colts should already be looking at pursuing.

3. Kevin King, Cornerback, Green Bay Packers

One very interesting potential addition to the secondary this offseason could be Kevin King. While he has been criticized over the last couple of years in Green Bay, King is still a very solid cornerback capable of making big plays. In a new situation with a more consistent role, King could have a breakout season.

During the 2021 season with the Packers, King ended up recording 29 total tackles to go along with an interception and three defended passes. However, back in 2019 as a full-time starter, King racked up 66 tackles, a sack, a forced fumble, five interceptions, and 15 defended passes.

At 26 years of age, King could be a perfect fit for the Colts. He stands in at 6-foot-3 and would give Indianapolis the kind of cornerback that can defend an opposing teams best wideout. King will be looking for a new home and the Colts could be a great place for him to land.

2. Tyrann Mathieu, Safety, Kansas City Chiefs

Sticking with the idea of upgrading the secondary, the Colts could look at a star like Tyrann Mathieu. He is known for his playmaking ability, which is something that Indianapolis needs to add more of this offseason.

Mathieu put together another solid season with the Chiefs this year. He ended up with 76 total tackles, one sack, three fumble recoveries, three interceptions, one defensive touchdown, and six defended passes. Those numbers show how much of an impact Mathieu is capable of making.

Granted, the Colts will have Julian Blackmon coming back from injury next season. But, maybe they can make Blackmon and Mathieu work alongside each other. Either way, the Colts have to figure out how to get better play out of their safety positions.

1. Allen Robinson, Wide Receiver, Chicago Bears

Finally, and most importantly, the Colts have to upgrade the wide receiver position. Gone are the days of T.Y. Hilton playing like a true No. 1 weapon. Michael Pittman Jr. has shown flashes of being a top wideout, but there is still plenty of work for him to do to get to that point consistently.

Ballard should go out and aggressively pursue Robinson this offseason. He is coming off of a season with the Bears that saw him catch just 38 passes for 410 yards and a touchdown. Last year, he racked up 102 receptions for 1,250 yards and six touchdowns.

A change of scenery could help Robinson get back to playing like a true star. He would also give Carson Wentz a much-needed top target. Robinson will receive quite a bit of interest on the open market, but the Colts should absolutely be one of the teams pursuing him.
