3 edge rushers the Texans should still target in free agency

Even after trading Hopkins, the Texans need to build a contending roster around Deshaun Watson while he’s on his rookie contract. That could lead Houston to pursue some of the veterans that remain in free agency.

Besides McPhee, another veteran that could be an intriguing choice for the Texans would be Clay Matthews. Following a remarkable 10-year career with the Green Bay Packers, Matthews joined the Los Angeles Rams in 2019.

The All-Pro edge rusher found the fountain of youth in Los Angeles, recording eight sacks and two forced fumbles in 2019. The eight sacks were the most that Matthews had in a season since 2014.

While Matthews would likely cost a bit more than McPhee, he wouldn’t count against Houston’s compensatory pick formula since he was released by the Rams. A duo of Matthews and Whitney Mercilus alongside J.J. Watt would give the Texans an upgrade over what they had in 2019.
