It is remarkable what an upgrade on the coaching staff and the supporting cast around a quarterback can do for a player. Tua Tagovailoa was facing a lot of naysayers this offseason as people didn’t believe he had the arm strength to get the job done in the NFL and questioned the Miami Dolphins selecting him over Justin Herbert during the 2020 NFL Draft.
Miami acquired Tyreek Hill from the Kansas City Chiefs this offseason and once again people were skeptical about how the move would turn out. Hill benefitted from the improvisation and huge arm of Patrick Mahomes, who excelled in making off-script plays.
The change to Tagovailoa has not changed much for Hill, who continues dominating secondaries as his go-to receiver. Hill is having a monster season, catching 87 passes for 1,233 yards and four touchdowns thus far as Tagovailoa has taken his game to another level in his third season in the NFL.
Just how good has the former Alabama standout been? According to PFF, he has been arguably the best quarterback in the league. He is currently first in the NFL in passing grade with 91.2, passer rating with 115.7 and yards per pass attempt at 9.0.
Those are some very impressive statistics for a player that many thought had limited arm talent and wouldn’t be able to take advantage of the weapons put around him. In addition to Hill, Tagovailoa has another explosive weapon in Jaylen Waddle to get the ball to. Waddle has caught 56 passes for 963 yards and six touchdowns in 11 games.
In addition to the gaudy stats, the most important thing that Tua Tagovailoa does is win football games. The Dolphins are 9-0 in games that he starts and finishes, as the only loss that they have in a game Tagovailoa has played in is when he suffered a scary head injury against the Cincinnati Bengals on Thursday Night Football.
