3 Intriguing Players Suggested As Dolphins’ Trade Targets

Overall, the Miami Dolphins had a strong first season under head coach Mike McDaniel. When quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was healthy, they were one of the best teams in the NFL. He had a great third season in the league, but the head injuries that he suffered derailed any chance the team had to compete.

Anytime a starting quarterback goes down, along with his backup as Teddy Bridgewater was also injured, it is tough for a team to overcome. But, the Dolphins made some upgrades to their roster to ensure they will remain competitive even if another injury occurs.

A lot of that focus this offseason has been on the defensive side of the ball. Miami struggled to slow down their opponents, especially through the air. So, they targeted players that would help turn around their pass defense.

Their biggest acquisition was Jalen Ramsey, whom they acquired from the Los Angeles Rams in a trade. The Dolphins also signed linebacker David Long Jr., but they may not be done making moves. If they want to compete with the high-octane offenses in the AFC, they could use some more reinforcements in the secondary.

That is why it is no surprise that the list of three shocking trade ideas the Dolphins could pursue before the 2023 season by Joe Tansey of Bleacher Report focuses so heavily on defense. More specifically, the secondary.

The first player mentioned was safety Budda Baker of the Arizona Cardinals. Baker is a premier safety and has a ton of versatility, capable of lining up at either safety spot or in the slot. Adding him alongside Jevon Holland would be an incredible pairing with Ramsey and Xavien Howard on the boundary.

Entering a rebuild, the Cardinals would likely jump at the opportunity to land premium draft capital. The same could be said about the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, whose safety of their own was mentioned as the next target.

Antoine Winfield Jr. could help the Buccaneers jumpstart their rebuild as a very good player on an affordable contract. He is set to hit free agency in 2024 and if Tampa Bay doesn’t plan on shelling out big money to retain him, flipping him for draft capital would make sense.

Last but not least, the Dolphins could go back to the Rams for another trade. This time it could be for tight end, Tyler Higbee. Miami lost Mike Gesicki in free agency this offseason and traded Hunter Long to Los Angeles as part of the Ramsey deal.

Higbee would present a solid upgrade over Durham Smythe, Tyler Kroft, Eric Saubert and Elijah Higgins. None are real threats as pass catchers, which Higbee can be. Adding another capable playmaker behind Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle would be ideal.
