Pittsburgh Steelers
Last season, the Pittsburgh Steelers had issues at the quarterback position once Ben Roethlisberger went down with an elbow injury. Nonetheless, at 38 years old, Roethlisberger is returning for his 17th season in the NFL, coming off elbow surgery.
Over the course of his 16 seasons thus far, Roethlisberger has played in all 16 games just four times. Therefore, the Steelers could use some insurance behind Roethlisberger in 2020. At the same time, it would give Newton a chance to start in a game or two while increasing his value.
While Roethlisberger was sidelined in 2019, Mason Rudolph and Devlin Hodges received opportunities to start in his place — to no avail. If Newton is serious about accepting a backup role, the Steelers would be a nice one-year option for him before he pursues another starting job in 2021. Of course, the Steelers would need to figure out their cap situation before signing Newton.
