Guard, Brandon Scherff
The interior of Chicago’s offensive line may need the most work this offseason. The Bears gave up 45 sacks and 86 quarterback hits last season. In addition, Chicago’s rushing attack only averaged 91.1 yards per game and 3.7 yards per carry, both were good for 27th in the NFL. This is all indicative of bad offensive line play.
Guard Ted Larsen, 33-years-old, will hit the open market as an unrestricted free agent in March, leaving a hole at the right guard position. Rashaad Coward played a bit at guard in 2019, but he didn’t do much to solidify the starting spot next year.
Pursuing offensive guard Brandon Scherff this offseason could fill that vacancy for the Bears. He has missed a total of 15 games over the past three seasons, which may be a cause for some concern. But when he’s healthy, he’s among the best interior lineman in the league.
He’s solid at pass blocking as well as zone run blocking. Per Pro Football Focus, Scherff ranked in the top-six when blocking for both gap and zone schemes in 2019
He’d be an instant upgrade to the Bears front.
