The Pittsburgh Steelers were already on their second quarterback, but found their first win of the season against the Atlanta Falcons last Sunday.
Heading into the game, any number of outcomes were seemingly possible. Kirk Cousins could have lit up the scoreboard or fallen victim to the pressure of Michael Penix Jr.
Meanwhile, Mike Tomlin’s team could have seen their quarterback situation blow up in their face. Instead, the Steelers pulled out a win.
However, there are layers to the victory worth peeling back. Here’s a look at three big takeaways after the first game.
Steelers might not need Russell Wilson, after all
While the Steelers are unlikely to cut ties with Russell Wilson any week soon, the pressure on needing him to start has effectively been erased. Justin Fields managed to squeak out a victory, proving that he can at least give the Steelers the ability to avoid a winless season.
While he didn’t light up the scoreboard by any means, he showed that he had the ability to win and avoid the crucial mistake. At this point, that might be good enough for Tomlin to procrastinate entertaining Wilson. At a bare minimum, the Steelers likely have bought themselves two games to take a longer look at Fields.
Najee Harris needs to find a new gear
While Justin Fields managed to rush 14 times in the game, his running back rushed 20 times. However, Harris failed to find the end zone and averaged just 3.5 yards per carry. It won’t take too many games at that average for Mike Tomlin to consider giving his backup Jaylen Warren a greater chance.
Of course, if he believes the offensive line is the issue, making a switch makes less sense. It wouldn’t matter if he had Adrian Peterson in his prime if his offensive line is the issue. At this point, it is too early to make a diagnosis, but running back is something on the radar moving forward.
TJ Watt is still impressive at the age of 30
The story of Week 1 was the first step into figuring out the team’s new offense. However, the Pittsburgh Steelers’ defense is as good as ever.
TJ Watt didn’t waste any time nabbing his first sack in the contest. With just one month until he turns 30 years old, the inevitable fall off could hit at any moment.
At least for now, Watt appears to be in his peak. If he keeps his current pace, he will earn 17 sacks this season, which would roughly be right in his wheelhouse. It is a long season ahead for the pass rusher, but for now, he appears to remain a star on this team.
