One of the players involved in the trade that sent Beckham to the Browns was Oliver Vernon. The negative side of acquiring Vernon was that Cleveland had to inherit his expensive contract.
In his lone season with the Browns, the veteran edge rusher recorded only 3.5 sacks, four tackles for loss, and one forced fumble. To make matters even worse, Vernon carries a $15.5 million cap hit for next season.
Luckily for the Browns, Vernon can be released without any consequences. If Cleveland were to release Vernon, he’d create $15.5 million in cap savings and wouldn’t induce a dead-cap penalty.
With that in mind, Cleveland should definitely consider parting ways with Vernon after just one season. The Browns would be better off finding a cheaper option to replace his production.
