3 players the Browns should target in the second round

The Browns have a need at the safety position as they have Sheldrick Redwine and J.T. Hassell as the only players from their 2019 roster still under contract. It does help temporarily that they at least managed to sign Karl Joseph and Andrew Sendejo to one-year deals in free agency.

One option for the safety position that could potentially be available for the Browns in the second round is Grant Delpit out of LSU. He is coming off a 2019 season with totals of 65 combined tackles (4.5 for loss), two sacks, two interceptions, seven passes defensed, and one forced fumble.

Lance Zierlein of NFL.com believes that Delpit ‘should find a starting role early in his career as a versatile safety with big nickel potential’ while being compared to Kenny Vaccaro. However, he did mention Delpit has some tackling inconsistency ‘that could be challenging to fix.’

Aggressive, urgent striker with good upside who posted a disappointing follow-up to an exciting 2018 campaign. His evaluation requires a full load of 2018 tape, where his coverage potential was better illustrated. He transitions with instinctive eyes and plays physically against tight ends. Willingness to rush in and hit has never been a problem in the alley or in his fits, but tackle inconsistencies have plagued him throughout his career due to angles and technique that could be challenging to fix. LSU sources say NFL teams won’t be getting the alpha leadership Jamal Adams provided for the Tigers, but Delpit should find a starting role early in his career as a versatile safety with big nickel potential.

Delpit was measured at 6’2″ and weighs 213 lbs with 30 3/8″ arms and 9 1/8″ hands. Due to an ankle injury, he was unable to participate in the on-field drills at the NFL Scouting Combine. There likely won’t be an opportunity to make up for it now as LSU cancelled its Pro Day.

The best case scenario is that the Browns add a safety prospect in the NFL Draft that can take on a larger role in 2021. With the holdover options being underwhelming in addition to the newcomers being under one-year deals, having a prospect under a cheap multi-year deal would be very beneficial.
