While the 2022 season isn’t over yet for the Indianapolis Colts, as they are 2.5 games out of a Wild Card spot with six weeks remaining in the season, their chances of qualifying for the postseason are slim. Regardless of how this season ends, the No. 1 task on their to-do list this offseason will be finding a solution at quarterback.

The Colts have been left scrambling since Andrew Luck shockingly retired ahead of the 2019 season. Indianapolis has had a different starting quarterback in Week 1 every year since 2016, acquiring a different veteran in three straight offseasons.

In 2020, Philip Rivers came for one season as a free agent before retiring. In 2021, Carson Wentz was acquired in a trade from the Philadelphia Eagles but was traded in 2022 to the Washington Commanders. In his place, the team acquired Matt Ryan from the Atlanta Falcons, but he has not provided the kind of upgrade they were hoping for and was already benched once this season.

With a playoff-caliber roster, the quarterback position is what is holding this team back. Who could the Colts look to address that need? Here are three options they should consider pursuing to replace Ryan.

3. Jordan Love

In the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft, the Green Bay Packers traded up to select Utah State quarterback, Jordan Love. Aaron Rodgers has gone on to win the MVP every season he has been in the NFL, but it won’t happen a third time. Rodgers has dealt with injuries and his future with the team is up in the air.

If he decides to return for 2023, that puts Love in a tough spot. He hasn’t had a real chance to play yet as the backup but would be heading into Year 4 in 2023. Love turned 24 earlier in November, so he could be the long-term answer that Indianapolis is seeking.

They have shown a willingness to make trades for quarterbacks in the past and this offseason should be no different. The Colts would be able to get a look at Love for at least one season and could always exercise his fifth-year option to keep him for a second.

There is a chance that Love gets to start games down the stretch of the season. If he does, it will be important for him as he could very well be auditioning for a job in 2023.

2. 2023 First-Round Pick

As things currently stand, the Colts are slated to be the 14th pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. While they have been competitive under interim head coach Jeff Saturday, his inexperience has shown at times when it comes to things such as clock management. As a result, it wouldn’t be shocking to see them lose more down the stretch and move up the draft board.

There is a real chance that the Colts can land a top-8 pick in the draft. That would put them in a prime position to select one of the highly-rated quarterback prospects in the 2023 draft class. While they likely won’t be in the running for Bryce Young or C.J. Stroud, things can change drastically between now and when the regular season ends in six weeks.

Even if they miss out on those two, Will Levis, Anthony Richardson and Hendon Hooker are other options that could be on the board when the Colts come on the clock. If they want to rebuild, this would be the most logical route.

1. Jimmy Garoppolo

While things have not gone well this season, the Colts are not void of talent. The offensive line needs some work, but this is an offense that has some excellent weapons in place with running back Jonathan Taylor and wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr.

Defensively, the Colts have one of the stronger units in the NFL. They are 11th in points surrendered and 5th in yardage as they are doing everything they can to keep their team in games and get some victories.

This isn’t a team that is far off from being able to contend for a playoff spot and make some noise in the postseason. Knowing that they could make a run at an established quarterback that has plenty left in the tank, such as Jimmy Garoppolo.

Garoppolo would fit in well in Indianapolis given the strength of the rest of the roster. He is trying to shake the game manager title this season as he has increased his passing touchdown percentage while cutting back on his turnovers. He couldn’t have picked a better time to improve as he is looking to cash in this offseason as a free agent.
