Learn from Aaron Rodgers
It would be wise for the Packers to at least start thinking about the future of the quarterback position. Aaron Rodgers likely has plenty of great years left but he did turn 36-years-old in December. With Jordan Love being a development prospect, this is an ideal situation.
There is real value in being able to see the daily process that goes into being an elite quarterback. The Packers would be able to benefit from Rodgers leading by example while Love adjust to the NFL level and works to improve his skills-set.
The Packers should already know the value of early preparation when it comes to replacing a long-time franchise-quarterback. They selected Rodgers with the No. 24 selection in the 2005 NFL Draft and it wasn’t until his fourth season in the NFL that he was a full-time starter.
Obviously not every developmental quarterback is going to end up being as dynamic as Patrick Mahomes, but he’s still a recent example of this type of arrangement working. He sat behind Alex Smith before taking over the starting quarterback role and ended up taking over the NFL, too.
