There was a successful recent example
Sometimes the best reference when contemplating a potential major decision is to look back at history for similar examples. Well, the Lions don’t even need to go too far back to find one. The Colts traded with the Jets to go from No. 3 down to No. 6 in the 2018 NFL Draft.
In their pursuit for Sam Darnold, the Jets gave up the No. 6, 37, and 49 selections in the 2018 NFL Draft along with a 2019 second-round pick (became the No. 34 selection). The Colts ended up taking who they wanted the whole time, All-Pro offensive lineman Quenton Nelson.
In the Lions’ case, they’d likely still be able to land who they are expected to want in Jeffrey Okudah while being compensated for making the move down the order. Depending on if the Dolphins and Chargers want the same quarterback prospect, this possibility would be interesting.
