Helps The San Francisco 49ers While Hurting A Rival
While weakening an opposing team is not a great reason to pay a player millions of dollars in free agency, when the player is a great value add, the subtraction from an opponent is a positive.
This should not end up being the top choice the 49ers take a chance on Aaron Jones, but with him being able to provide consistency at the running back position, create a solid one-two punch with him and Mostert, and turn more red-zone opportunities into touchdowns taking down the Packers is a good bonus.
The Packers have had a few back-and-forth seasons, but Jones was a key cog in the machine that helped Aaron Rodgers find success last year. Already a few games into the season and Jones is carrying the Packers become legitimate Super Contenders.
If the Packers lose Jones in free agency they will really need to work fast to find a replacement, but the guarantee is not there. If San Francisco can improve their team while weakening on the biggest contenders in the NFC, they should take full advantage of that opportunity.
