2. A Void of Talent Around Him
The Redskins did without left tackle Trent Williams for all of last season, as he held out due to the mishandling of a medical situation and the team eventually put him on the non-football injury list. In his seven starts last year, Haskins was sacked 25 times (at least three times five times).
Tight end Jordan Reed missed the entire season with a concussion, further thinning a thin group of pass catchers. Haskins’ fellow rookie Terry McLaurin led Washington in catches (58), yards (919) and receiving touchdowns (7) last year. No one else had 400 receiving yards, and running back Chris Thompson was the only other player with over 40 catches (42). Reed has been cut, as expected, and the additions to this point (Cody Latimer, Peyton Barber, Richard Rodgers) are bit pieces at best.
Williams might be traded or cut, which would leave Donald Penn at left tackle again. Until Haskins has more than one good wide receiver to work with and maybe a tight end that is a real threat, to say nothing of more than one or two average/above average offensive lineman to protect him, he’ll be at a disadvantage.
