3. Garoppolo has the team’s support
Making a change at the quarterback position immediately after making it all the way to the Super Bowl probably wouldn’t go over well in the 49ers’ locker room. Especially when considering how Jimmy Garoppolo was coming off a torn ACL and still has room for growth.
A recent post from George Kittle on Instagram featured the caption ‘let’s run it back 10!’ The timing of the post makes it seem that it could be a response to the recent rumors involving the 49ers and Brady.
Another teammate made his support in a more direct fashion. In a recent interview, Jeff Wilson Jr. questioned how the 49ers could consider moving Garoppolo after he managed to lead the team to a Super Bowl appearance despite coming off a torn ACL.
“It’s ludicrous,” Wilson said of Brady replacing Garoppolo as the 49ers’ quarterback, via Jose Luis Sanchez III of Sports Illustrated. “He just took us all the way to the Super Bowl, great season, 14 wins. I mean there’s not a lot of quarterbacks that’s even in this league that just had a season like that. And then you go from that season taking a team all the way to the Super Bowl, to talks of being traded?
“He’s a great quarterback. He’s been that way ever since he’s been to San Fran. It’s just unfortunate that he got hurt the year before and then kind of, you know, threw him back in the wilderness a little bit, but he came right back in like he never left and took a team all the way to the Super Bowl, so how can you talk about moving him? Or trading him to another team?”
It seems that it would be a hard sell to the leaders of the 49ers locker room that the ‘reward’ for leading a team to a Super Bowl is being traded. The added circumstances that suggest being patient with Garoppolo is the more logical approach would only make it worse.
