3 reasons Tom Brady makes zero sense for the 49ers

1. Would undercut Garoppolo’s momentum

Going out and signing a soon to be 43-year-old quarterback is not a move that is made with the future in mind. Tom Brady probably has one or two seasons left in his NFL career and mortgaging the long-term future for that isn’t worthwhile.

The 49ers had a highly successful 2019 season with Jimmy Garoppolo as their starting quarterback. He put together a respectable season racking up 3,978 passing yards, 27 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions while completing 329 of his 476 pass attempts.

At the NFL Scouting Combine, 49ers general manager John Lynch was asked about Garoppolo. Lynch made it clear that Garoppolo is ‘our guy’ and he still has plenty of room to grow with more experience in the team’s system.

“We’re extremely proud of Jimmy and committed to Jimmy moving forward,” Lynch said. “He’s our guy. From the day he walked into our building, he made us better and we continue to feel that’s the case, and that’s the most exciting thing about him, is the room for growth. He has not come close to hitting the ceiling.

“I think the room for growth, the more experience he gets in this system, the more experience he gets playing, in general, we think the arrow’s up, and that’s a good thing.”

The comment Lynch made is exactly the reasoning regarding why it would be foolish to move on from Garoppolo as the team’s starting quarterback. Giving him more time to develop and seeing what his ceiling makes the most sense as opposed to abruptly pulling the plug on it.
