3 super early predictions for Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes in 2021

The Kansas City Chiefs enjoyed yet another dominant campaign in 2020. The AFC West team finished the year with a robust 14-2 record and made their second straight Super Bowl appearance in large part because of their star quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

While the Chiefs lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the big game, it would be foolish to believe this team will suddenly do a belly flop in 2021. Mahomes is one of the best of the business and, thankfully for him, he is on a team that possesses a lot of offensive talent.

Certainly, the Bucs deserve a great amount of credit for the amazing defense they implemented against Mahomes in the Super Bowl. At the same time, it is worth noting that keeping Mahomes and his crew out of the end zone is a rarity. Thus, there is no reason to believe the Chiefs will put up a bunch of stinkers like this because of one anomaly.

Fresh off yet another spectacular season, it is safe to say Patrick Mahomes is going to continue to turn heads moving forward. Below are three super early predictions for the 25-year-old headed into the 2021 season.

3. Mahomes Will Complete At Least 67.0% Of His Passes

Throughout the course of his career, Mahomes has been the model of consistency as far as his completion percentages are concerned. In 2018, the quarterback completed 66.0 percent of his passes, whereas in the following two seasons, he posted marks of 65.9 percent and 66.3 percent.

As a result, it is rather difficult to imagine Mahomes’ accuracy taking a hit in 2021. Frankly, it is reasonable to conjecture that his percentages may rise this coming season.

Mahomes is on the verge of entering his fourth full season and, to use the words of Frank Sinatra, one could argue the best is yet to come for the QB. Mahomes has an absolute cannon of an arm and is more than adept at making precise passes even while being heavily blitzed.

Given that point and due to Kansas City’s elite offense, it is entirely plausible Mahomes could register a 67.0 percent completion mark this autumn. If the signal-caller can get the job done, it would be a career high for the former Texas Tech standout.

2. AFC West Division Title

The following may not come across as too big of a surprise on account of the fact that the Chiefs have made two straight Super Bowl appearances. Granted, Justin Herbert and the Los Angeles Chargers could make some noise in 2021, it is illogical to bet against Andy Reid’s squad.

As was previously echoed, the Chiefs achieved a 14-2 record last season, which was more than good enough for them to earn the AFC West crown. Barring a miraculous set of circumstances, one can conjecture they are the favorites to claim a sixth straight division title.

To say that Patrick Mahomes is the best quarterback in the division is a massive understatement. The proof is in the pudding as to why the Chiefs signed No. 15 to such a mega contract last year. While the amount is mega, indeed, Mahomes is a young, generational talent and is not slowing down anytime soon.

Provided that the gunslinger has Travis Kelce and Tyreek Hill on his side as well, there is reason to believe the Chiefs will not be sinking in the standings in 2021. If the team can improve their QB protection this offseason, too, it would be a major help to Mahomes. Although the superstar is capable of weaving his way out of traffic, adding some big bodies would make the Chiefs’ offense even more lethal.

1. Mahomes Will Win His Second MVP Award

While Patrick Mahomes garnered a few MVP votes this past campaign, it was not nearly enough to usurp Green Bay Packers’ QB Aaron Rodgers. One could contend the latter had the best season of his illustrious career last year, thus validating the idea that age is nothing more than a number.

However, it is hard to imagine Rodgers will be able to match his 2020 production in his age 38 season. Albeit he led the league in several departments such as completion percentage last year (70.7 percent), it is curious whether Rodgers can continue to be that good.

Discounting the Packers’ QB, Mahomes is bound to play with an extra chip on his shoulder in 2021. A Super Bowl defeat should provide enough incentive for the Chiefs’ leader to go all out this fall.

Mahomes enjoyed plenty of success from a personal standpoint in 2020. He managed to set a career-high in completion percentage (66.3 percent), while leading the NFL in passing yards per contest (316.0). Moreover, Mahomes also tied Rodgers for the best interception percentage in the league (1.0).

That being said, expect more great things from the three-time Pro Bowler in 2021. Better yet, expect him to add yet another trophy to his collection when all is said and done.
