The Dallas Cowboys were riding high after Week 1. Now, they are riding low after running into the buzzsaw that was the New Orleans Saints.
In the wake of the loss, the team, fans, and analysts are attempting to put together the pieces to understand what took place on Sunday. Thus far, there are no concrete answers aside from Alvin Kamara’s triumphant revitalization.
Aside from that, there are some things to take away from the Cowboys’ side of things.
Here’s a look at three big observations about the team after the Week 2 game.
Rico Dowdle challenging Ezekiel Elliott for starting honors
Ezekiel Elliott was seemingly brought in to be the starter this season. However, in Week 2, his starting job might be on the line.
Elliott rushed just six times in the contest, one fewer carry than Rico Dowdle received. In the game, Elliott earned just 16 yards in his attempts, earning 2.7 yards per carry.
Put simply, it isn’t a good look for the veteran who has seen more than enough fans begin to believe that the sun might be setting on him. Sunday’s contest certainly didn’t help his case.
CeeDee Lamb’s rust isn’t going to linger for Dallas Cowboys
CeeDee Lamb had five catches for just 61 yards in the Cowboys’ season-opening 33-17 win over the Browns. As such, it appeared that the receiver had some rust to shake off after missing the preseason due to a holdout. Well, the rust appears to be receding, if not already worked off heading into Week 3.
Against the Saints, Lamb out-earned his production last week despite getting fewer catches. He earned 90 yards and a touchdown in the loss.
Contract timing was clutch for Dak Prescott
Had Dak Prescott not received his expensive new deal before the season, Jerry Jones would have had the perfect reason to delay a deal even longer. However, with the ink dry on the page, Prescott can breathe a sigh of relief that he won’t be impacted by his stat line in the game.
The Dallas Cowboys’ quarterback threw for one touchdown and two interceptions. He now has two touchdowns and two interceptions on the year, placing him well behind Derek Carr, who is tied for the league lead at five touchdowns and an interception.
