3 teams who must consider signing Richard Sherman before the season

The 2021 NFL season is right around the corner and quite a few teams could still be looking to upgrade their roster. Among the current available free agents is veteran cornerback Richard Sherman. It is surprising that he is still available, but it seems very likely that someone will scoop him up before the start of the regular season.

Sherman has been a star throughout his NFL career split between the Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers. He has bene one of the league’s best lockdown corners and has made some huge plays.

Unfortunately, he isn’t getting any younger and teams obviously don’t view him as a superstar anymore. He has had some injury issues in recent years and was only able to play in five games last year. In those five games, however, he recorded 18 total tackles, an interception, and a defended pass.

Looking ahead to the start of the 2021 NFL season, here are three teams who should make a late-offseason move to sign Richard Sherman to beef up their secondary.

3. Chicago Bears

After making the surprising move to release Kyle Fuller earlier this offseason, the Bears might be interested in a short-term contract with Sherman. He would be able to come in and earn a starting role right off the bat. Chicago is also looking to take a big step forward in 2021 from where they finished last season.

Sherman would bring a hard-nosed play-style to the Bears’ secondary. They will need that, especially if Aaron Rodgers decides to return to the Green Bay Packers.

Chicago is the least likely potential landing spot on this list, but they have to be added. If Ryan Pace wants to improve the Bears’ defense, Sherman would be a very quick and easy move to make that happen.

2. Dallas Cowboys

Next up, the Cowboys are another team that would make perfect sense as a potential Richard Sherman landing spot. Jerry Jones has never shied away from making big moves for veteran stars. Sherman would be able to come in and start immediately and provide Dallas a much-needed boost in the defensive secondary.

Many believe that the Cowboys could be a potential dark-horse Super Bowl contender this season. The main thing that could stand in their way? It would be the defense.

Dallas struggled mightily defensively in 2020 and a move to sign Sherman could help them right the ship. They made some big defensive moves earlier this offseason, especially in the 2021 NFL Draft, but Sherman would be an immediate improvement. This pairing makes too much sense.

1. Seattle Seahawks

Finally, how about a return to the Seahawks for Richard Sherman? He began his career with Seattle and was a fan favorite and superstar for the franchise. Sherman was a big part of creating the “Legion of Boom” and would be welcomed back to the Seahawks with open arms.

Seattle also needs to find more stability in the secondary. Sherman would likely be a starter in Week 1. Pete Carroll and company have to find more talent at the cornerback position and they shouldn’t look any farther than an old friend.

At this point in the offseason, the Seahawks are without a doubt the clear-cut best and most likely landing spot for Sherman. He is familiar with the franchise and Seattle still holds a special place in his heart. Don’t be shocked if he reunites with the Seahawks before the start of the season.
