3 teams who should pursue a trade for Cowboys WR Michael Gallup

The Dallas Cowboys have one of the best wide receiver trios in the NFL. Amari Cooper, CeeDee Lamb, and Michael Gallup give Dallas a lot of firepower offensively. All three could make a case to be the top option.

But, keeping all three long-term may not be feasible. Gallup is in the final year of his contract and it is difficult to envision him remaining with the team beyond this season. Lamb is entering his second season in the NFL and Cooper is already locked into a long-term deal.

If the Cowboys don’t think they can keep Gallup as well, they could consider trading him to shore up another spot on the roster or avoid seeing him walk in free agency without any compensation.

Gallup has produced well in his career with the Cowboys, including a career-high 1,107 yards and six touchdowns in 2019. Last season, despite Dak Prescott being injured, Gallup managed 843 yards and five touchdowns.

There is no denying the talent that Gallup has. Should Dallas shop him, plenty of teams will be interested. Here are three teams that should pursue a trade for him.

3. Kansas City Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs have one of the most explosive offenses in the NFL. With the offensive line being revamped, they should be even better in 2021.

The presence of tight end Travis Kelce lessens the need for wide receivers in Kansas City, but it is an under-the-radar need. Outside of Tyreke Hill, the Chiefs will be relying on some unproven players hoping they step up this season.

Byron Pringle, Mecole Hardman and Demarcus Robinson will be asked to hold the fort down behind Hill and Kelce. If they are unable to produce, a midseason trade for someone like Michael Gallup could be in the works.

2. Philadelphia Eagles

The Philadelphia Eagles depth chart at wide receiver is not encouraging. They are lacking in experience, as there isn’t a single player at the position currently on the roster with more than two years of NFL experience.

DeVonta Smith was selected in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft and will slot immediately into a starting role. Last year’s first-round pick, Jalen Reagor, will be opposite of him. Adding a player such as Micheal Gallup in an inner-division trade with the Cowboys would take a lot of pressure off of them and give Jalen Hurts a reliable target that has found success in the NFL.

The Eagles are asking for a lot from young players with an inexperienced quarterback under center as well.

1. New Orleans Saints

The New Orleans Saints had to part ways with a lot of veterans this offseason as they had a salary-cap crunch. One area of the team that could use some help is the wide receiver position.

Michael Thomas is currently sidelined and if he is placed on the PUP list to begin the season, will miss at least five games. Marquez Callaway and Tre’Quan Smith will be tasked with leading the wide receiver group until then.

Adding someone with a little more experience would make this transition easier for everyone. Acquiring Michael Gallup from the Cowboys would provide Jameis Winston with some insurance in case Thomas is unable to return to form.
