Draft A Cornerback In Round 1
The 49ers’ defense was held in high regard all season long as they were among one of the most complete groups in the NFL. Robert Saleh’s defensive unit received all sorts of attention do to their ferocious defensive line who applied pressure on opposing quarterbacks 28.7% of the time.
With minimal needs on defense, one area they must look to upgrade this offseason is cornerback. Richard Sherman’s ability to cover allusive wide receivers is still apparent at age 31, and Emmanuel Mosley provided the secondary with adequate play, but cornerback needs to be the top priority in San Francisco this offseason as they lack depth in this area.
This year’s draft class contains a multitude of defensive backs and the 49ers should be interested in the cornerback department before the end of round one. General Manager John Lynch, a former defensive back in his own right, should have his hands all over this draft as he’s worked simultaneously with Shanahan to build the current roster from the ground up since they both arrived in 2017.
San Fransico will be picking at the end of the first round and many playmakers should still be on the board when they are on the clock, such as C.J. Henderson, Trevon Diggs, Damon Arnette, and A.J. Terrell. All four players are options the 49ers coaching staff and front office will more than likely do their due diligence on during the college prospects’ pro day and combine.
