3 under the radar free agents to watch for the Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys had an awful season in 2020, but it was largely because of the season-ending injury suffered by Dak Prescott. While the main focus for the Cowboys this offseason needs to be on Prescott, there are some other areas of need for Dallas as well.

The Cowboys had one of the worst defenses in the NFL in 2020 and they could look to use the large majority of their offseason acquisitions to address the dire needs on the defensive side of the ball. Dallas has some good players in their linebacker corps in Leighton Vander-Esch and Jaylon Smith, but they need to keep their focus on their secondary and defensive line.

It’s not all bad news for Dallas, however, as they have one of the best running backs in the NFL in their backfield and their receiving corps is emerging as one of the best in the NFL. The Cowboys also have some young talent in Trevon Diggs in the secondary, which is a solid stepping stone moving forward.

Dallas has their fair share of needs this offseason and they will need to get creative with their salary cap in hopes of being a contender next season.

Let’s take a look at three under the radar additions that Dallas could make this offseason.

Number One: Josh Norman, Cornerback

The Cowboys’ secondary did make a major leap in 2020 as they ranked in the top 15 in terms of pass yardage allowed, but they should still look to add some depth to the position this offseason. One player in particular the Cowboys could sign for cheap is Buffalo Bills cornerback Josh Norman.

Everyone loves to bring up the stiff arm Norman took from Derrick Henry to judge the man’s play style, but they shouldn’t. Norman has been one of the most efficient cornerbacks in the NFL over the past few years and he could have a major impact on a needy Dallas defense.

Norman, in 2020, accumulated 24 tackles, two tackles for a loss, one forced fumble, two fumbles recovered, four passes defended, one interception, and one defensive touchdown in just nine games with the Buffalo Bills. Him having that much success for one of the best defenses in the NFL should excite the Cowboys and make them offer Norman from the rip.

Number Two: Dalvin Tomlinson, Defensive Tackle

The Cowboys have a major need to fill some holes on their defensive line and the addition of Dalvin Tomlinson could do that for them. Tomlinson, 27, weighs 318 pounds and is versatile enough to play anywhere on the defensive line.

The Dallas defense ranked near the last spot in terms of rushing yardage allowed in 2020 and the addition of Tomlinson could hep the unit plug some running lanes. Tomlinson’s big frame would be difficult for opposing offensive lines to contain and he has the potential to do some serious damage with the Cowboys.

Tomlinson has spent the first four years of his career competing against the Cowboys and other teams in the NFC East and could choose to stay in the division and dominate in Dallas. Adding Tomlinson would be the best decision Jerry Jones and the Cowboys could make this offseason.

Number Three: Jared Cook, Tight End

If there’s any area of the Cowboys’ offense that needs some work it’s the tight end position. Jared Cook could come in right away and be a high impact player for the Cowboys just like he was for the New Orleans Saints.

Aside from a couple costly drops and a fumble in the NFC Divisional Round, Cook was a very good player for the Drew Brees led Saints. Cook hauled in 80 receptions, 1,209 receiving yards, and 16 touchdowns over a two-season span and he could look to carry that success with him to the lone star state.

Cook would give Dak Prescott a lanky downfield target to throw to and could make the Dallas offense more versatile. The key to a good football team seems to run through the tight end position as of late and the Cowboys could benefit from adding Cook.
