Helps to Maximize Jimmy Garoppolo
The 49ers are invested in Jimmy Garoppolo as their long-term answer at the quarterback position. That’s why it is crucial to surround him with offensive weapons that fit his tendencies to help maximize not only his personal impact, but the production of the offense as a whole.
During the 2019 season, Garoppolo had the lowest deep-pass rate (6.2 percent) in the NFL as the 49ers thrived with their rushing attack and with short yardage throws. Having a playmaker like Brandon Aiyuk will help to accommodate this style of play.
Not only does Aiyuk fit the mold of what the 49ers need in short-yardage situations with his footwork and run after the catch ability, he can add additional layers. They now have another receiver that can get open downfield and that could be what Garoppolo needs to do it more.
The results were advantageous when Garoppolo did throw deep last season even though it didn’t occur at a high frequency. He managed to complete a league-best 58.1 percent of his deep passes for seven touchdowns and a 102.6 quarterback rating.
