Tampa Bay won’t use their franchise tag

On February 27, teams around the NFL were given the go-ahead to begin using their franchise tags. For months, it has been assumed that the Buccaneers could use their franchise tag on Winston.

Now, Tampa Bay has two viable players that could receive the franchise tag with Shaquil Barrett joining the fray. In all likeliness, one of them is going to be playing under the franchise tag next season.

However, this is a bold predictions article and there is a slim chance that the Buccaneers don’t use their franchise tag. In the event that Tampa Bay doesn’t utilize their franchise tag, it would likely mean that Barrett got a long-term deal and Winston’s time with the Buccaneers is over.

If Winston isn’t tagged, the team has shown no signs of wanting to negotiate a multi-year contract with him. Therefore, no tag on Winston would likely result in the Buccaneers signing a veteran in free agency to replace him.
