Can Isaiah Simmons Slow TEs Down?
During the NFL Draft, the Arizona Cardinals made a somewhat surprising choice by selecting former Clemson linebacker Isaiah Simmons with the No. 8 pick. He is slotted to play inside linebacker for the Cardinals and could be the uniquely fitting talent necessary for the defense to take the next step.
The top priority for the Cardinals to improve defensively is to better slow down opposing passing attacks. Last season, they gave up 4,510 passing yards (29th), 38 passing touchdowns (29th), and 342 1st downs using passing (30th).
When digging a bit deeper, it’s clear the Cardinals’ main weakness in pass coverage situations was handling tight ends. Opposing teams managed to pass for 1,148 yards and 16 touchdowns when throwing to tight ends. No team gave up more than Arizona in either category.
The versatility Simmons provides as a rare athlete and multi-positional defender should help the Cardinals cover tight ends. He has more than enough size along with high-level speed to neutralize the typical matchup problems that occur for a defense when covering this position.
