4 burning questions surrounding Chargers QB Philip Rivers’ free agency

3. What Is He Looking For?

It’s safe to say Philip Rivers would like a chance to win a Super Bowl, as a final bullet point on what is currently a borderline Hall of Fame resume. That ship has sailed with the Chargers, even if they absolutely wanted him back and there are no indications that’s the case.

Among the teams who can be most easily speculated on as landing spots for Rivers, few if any seem ready to make a legit Super Bowl run next year. But we would have said similar things about the Philadelphia Eagles heading into the 2017 season, as a recent example, and they went on to win Super LII.

Does Rivers want one last nice payday, on a one or two-year deal? Or would he take less than the market may bear for him, and either embrace competing for a starting job or the idea he’s the proverbial final piece for a contending team that may be a bit cap-strapped? Time will tell, but what Rivers wants and how that will or won’t be accommodated by the market is a critical question as he hits free agency.
