4 burning questions surrounding Chargers QB Philip Rivers’ free agency

Christopher Hanewinckel-USA TODAY Sports

1. Who Will Want Him?

The Buccaneers, with a head coach in Bruce Arians who is not necessarily in it for the long haul, will surely be pivoting from Jameis Winston while trying to win now and make a push up the standings. Arians’ work with a late-career Carson Palmer in Arizona, and his overall history with quarterbacks, is something Philip Rivers has to be keenly aware of.

The Colts are not fully committed to Jacoby Brissett, and the coaching staff in Indianapolis has ties to Rivers. Head coach Frank Reich was the quarterbacks coach and then offensive coordinator for the Chargers from 2013-15, and Colts offensive coordinator Nick Sirianni was on the Chargers’ coaching staff (including two years as quarterbacks coach) from 2013-2017.

If the Tennessee Titans let Ryan Tannehill go, Rivers will become an option. Rivers has apparently expressed desire to play for the Titans.

If Tom Brady indeed leaves, the New England Patriots would be an interesting possible landing spot for Rivers.
