The Chicago Bears have gotten off to an 0-4 start in the 2023 season. That means they have gone nearly an entire calendar year without a victory, as they ended the 2022 season on a 10-game losing streak.
Not surprisingly, there have been some rumors that if the Bears lose on Thursday Night Football against the Washington Commanders in Week 5, head coach Matt Eberflus would lose his job. Based on how the team has performed under him to this point, he is lucky to have survived this long.
The Bears have been the worst team in the NFL since Eberflus took over and there are no signs of things turning around. Coming off a loss in Week 4 in which Chicago blew a 21-point fourth-quarter lead, it is probably best to start over with a clean slate.
If Eberflus is fired, the Bears could be an intriguing job opening. They still have a good amount of cap space to spend and will have two first-round picks in the 2024 NFL Draft that are trending toward the top. They own the Carolina Panthers’ first-rounder and both teams are the last winless teams in the league.
One person to keep an eye on as a potential Eberflus replacement, in the opinion of Lance Fernandez, is Todd Monken. He took over this year as the offensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens and would do wonders for Justin Fields.
Being coached by the person who is overseeing a Lamar Jackson-run offense this season would be ideal, should Fields remain on the team as the starting quarterback. The same line of thinking could be used for the second option, Detroit Lions offensive coordinator, Ben Johnson.
If Fields isn’t retained, the Bears will likely have one of the top quarterback prospects from the 2024 NFL Draft on the roster. Pairing him with a bright offensive-minded coach such as Johnson would do wonders for any quarterback.
Another offensive coordinator who should be on the Bears’ radar is Ken Dorsey of the Buffalo Bills. He took over the team’s offense when Brian Daboll was hired as head coach of the New York Giants in 2022.
Buffalo was the No. 2 overall offense in 2022 and is trending in that direction again in 2023 with Dorsey at the helm. Last but not least, could this finally be the time we see Kellen Moore get a head coaching job?
The offensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Chargers has been great in his first season after coming over from the Dallas Cowboys. It won’t be long until we see him as a head coach somewhere given the resume he has built up as a coordinator.
