Vikings Will Lead NFL in Rushing
With Kirk Cousins having a career year, a big part of that will be because of his plays off play-action. In 2019, there are highlights of the Vikings picking up big chunk plays due to play action. That only happens when a team has a strong rushing attack and that will be the case for Minnesota in 2020.
There’s nothing head coach Mike Zimmer likes better than running the football and playing good defense. One of the most underrated qualities with this Vikings offense is their depth at running back. Behind Dalvin Cook, they have two reliable options who can contribute in the ground game with Alexander Mattison and Mike Boone.
In 2019, the two proved they were effective when they saw action on the gridiron. On 100 carries, Mattison averaged 4.6 per carry with 462 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Boone averaged 5.6 yards per carry on 49 rushes, 273 yards and three touchdowns.
The Vikings could turn to either one of these backs if Cook needs a breather or the Vikings are up big. Incorporating these two backs will also help reduce the week-to-week load on Cook to keep his legs fresh late in the season when they need him most.
