4 perfect defensive targets for the Colts in NFL free agency

Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

D.J. Reader

Aside from the secondary, the Colts would be wise to shore up their defensive front. This past season, Indianapolis featured Denico Autry and Grover Stewart along their interior defensive line.

While they played decent at times, the Colts lacked consistency in the interior of their defense. Given that, D.J. Reader could be a viable target for Indianapolis when free agency begins.

Even though the Colts would like to add an interior defender with pass-rushing capabilities, Reader wouldn’t be an awful contingency plan. In the past four seasons, Reader has proven he’s a stout run defender that is continually getting better as a pass rusher.

With the Houston Texans, Reader recorded a career-high 2.5 sacks and 13 quarterback hits in 2019. Being that the Colts face the Texans twice a year, Indianapolis knows how good Reader can be in the middle of their defensive line.
