Lucas Niang
Aside from the decision to part ways with Rivers, another notable move that could be made is the release of Russell Okung. The veteran left tackle has spent the past three seasons as the starting blindside protector for the Chargers.
However, Okung was only able to play in six games in 2019 due to a blood clot in his lungs and a groin ailment. Additionally, Okung is slated to make $15.5 million in 2020 (second-largest cap hit for the team next season).
By releasing Okung, the Chargers could create $13 million in cap savings while incurring a dead-cap penalty of $2 million. Therefore, they could look to find his replacement in the draft.
Among the options in the second round, Lucas Niang is an interesting prospect. Niang displayed power and athleticism at the tackle position at TCU.
But during the 2019 season, Niang had to undergo hip surgery for a torn labrum. If his medical evaluations come out positive, the Chargers should express interest in Niang.
