4 perfect trade targets for the Cowboys at the NFL trade deadline

The Dallas Cowboys currently sit atop a putrid NFC East. They are 2-4 and coming off a embarrassing performance on Monday night against the Arizona Cardinals. In Week 7, they will face Washington looking to extend their lead in the division.

The Cowboys lost Dak Prescott to an ankle injury and will now have Andy Dalton under center. Despite the recent rumors, a trade for Ryan Fitzpatrick is unlikely. The Miami Dolphins recently named Tua Tagovailoa their starting quarterback and having Fitzpatrick around as a veteran voice is beneficial.

Dallas has bigger issues. Their defense is one of the worst in the league this season. They are allowing 36.3 points and 410 yards per game. Teams are dominating them on the ground with 173 rushing yards per contest. We knew that their secondary was weak coming into the season, but their defensive front has followed suit.

With the trade deadline approaching, the Cowboys are a team that should make some moves. Someone from the NFC East is going to host a playoff game and right now, that would be the Cowboys.

Here are four options they could look into.

Marcus Maye, Cowboys

4. Marcus Maye

The Cowboys were linked to Jamal Adams throughout the offseason. The dream ended when he was traded to the Seattle Seahawks, but there is another safety in New York they could look to target.

Maye is not the player that Adams is, but he is still a really good safety and would be an upgrade in Dallas. In four years with the Jets, Maye has created seven turnovers and has 14 pass breakups.

The Jets are an early favorite to land the No. 1 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. They have a chance to go 0-16 this season. They will likely have a new head coach and quarterback next season. This is a time where they should be looking to move assets and load up on draft picks.

If the Cowboys made this move, they would pair Maye with Xavier Woods. This would improve the secondary immediately and give the Cowboys a reliable, hard-hitting option.

Da'Shawn Hand, Cowboys

3. Da’Shawn Hand

Hand might not be the big name blockbuster deal that would excite fans, but he would improve their defensive line. This is something the Cowboys need due to the fact that they have been getting gashed in the run game this season.

In Detroit, Hand was a force his rookie season but has taken a step back. Dallas has lost Gerald McCoy and Trysten Hill for the season.

Neville Gallimore is still young and learning how to be a starter and veteran Tyrone Crawford is still there, but is looking like he is past his prime. Hand has the ability to play inside and would help plug the rushing attack.

This would be a desperation move for the Cowboys. They would be able to get Hand cheap and insert him into the lineup immediately. Dallas cannot continue their season allowing teams to get comfortable on the ground.

David Njoku, Browns, Patriots, Cowboys
Scott R. Galvin-USA TODAY Sports

2. David Njoku

Njoku’s time in Cleveland seems to be coming to an end quick. The Browns signed Austin Hooper and drafted Harrison Bryant in the offseason. They did not pick up Njoku’s fifth-year option and he has since asked for a trade. The Cowboys could be a destination.

Blake Jarwin is on IR and Dalton Schultz has not been the answer. The Cowboys are full of playmakers on the offensive side of the ball. Ezekiel Elliott is one of the top running backs in the league and the receiving corps is loaded.

Amari Cooper and Michael Gallup are a productive duo. Rookie CeeDee Lamb has quickly turned in to one of their top weapons. Adding an athletic tight end like Njoku would just add to the offense.

The Cowboys have made calls to Cleveland about Njoku, but they are not willing to give up a high draft pick. This is something they might not have to do given the current relationship between the Browns and Njoku.

Desmond King, Cowboys
Charles LeClaire — USA TODAY Sports

1. Desmond King

Desmond King was named an All-Pro in 2018, but has not been playing at the same level since. He is used in the nickel, but has the ability to play safety. This is where the Cowboys could use him the most.

King has been an aggressive defender throughout his career, but the Los Angeles Chargers have not been using him in the way he wants. This has caused unhappy feelings and Dallas could try to take advantage with a trade.

Dallas could use a playmaker in the secondary and that is what King is. He would also be used as a returner on special teams. Playmakers of any kind would help the Cowboys moving forward.

If King is unhappy in Los Angeles, a change of scenery would be the best thing for him. This is how he could land in Dallas. Expect Jerry Jones to make a move to try and improve his team and King could be a top option.
