4 Players on the Roster Bubble for the Green Bay Packers

Moving ahead with the new look Green Bay Packers led by Jordan Love under center, the Packers will look to improve on their 2023 season results after making it to the Divisional Round.

Somewhat unexpected after the departure of long-time quarterback Aaron Rodgers, last season’s team sprung up a nice surprise by not just making it to the postseason, but by thumping the heavily favorite Dallas Cowboys in the Wild Card Round.

However, that is in the past, and Matt LaFleur and his coaching staff will now be dialed in to make some tough calls before the season kicks off.

It is close to that time of the year when NFL teams need to announce their 53-man rosters. Green Bay has a few positions where they will have to decide on the hierarchy of the players.

For example, the wide receiver unit has several players on similar levels of talent, and deciding the depth of the position will be crucial. Other positions will require a much more inverted effort to ensure the best possible unit is retained.

Having said that, let us go over a few players who are on the roster bubble for the Packers for the 2024 season.

Emanuel Wilson, RB

With the departure of Aaron Jones to the Vikings, Green Bay brought in former Raiders star Josh Jacobs to lead the backfield. Jacobs will be the main threat in the backfield without question, but behind him, the competition is stiff for the backups.

This year, the Packers selected MarShawn Lloyd in Round 3 of the draft. It is looking like he will be given the nod ahead of Wilson. Moreover, Green Bay also has their 2020 second-rounder, AJ Dillon, who has given them good production over the years. Dillon should in all certainty be the backup to Jacobs, which means Wilson may not make the roster.

Samori Toure, WR

Green Bay currently has a lot of young talent in their wide receiver room with Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs, Jayden Reed, and Dontayvion Wicks looking good for roster locks. Last year, we also saw the emergence of Bo Melton, albeit for a few games.

The seventh-round draft pick from 2022, Samori Toure made the main roster in both 2022 and 2023. However, he looks to have dropped down in the pecking order and is probably the best bet to miss out on one of the final receiver spots.

Tyler Davis, TE

Believe it or not, the Packers drafted two tight ends in back-to-back rounds in 2023 when they selected Luke Musgrave in Round 2 and Tucker Kraft in Round 3. They also signed undrafted free agent Ben Sims.

Musgrave and Kraft stepped up big for Green Bay in their rookie seasons, going for 352 and 355 yards respectively. On the other hand, Tyler Davis, who began his professional career in 2020, has yet to produce anything of significance on the offense. Despite being a capable blocker, his most notable contributions have come on special teams.

Recovering from an ACL injury, it is looking quite difficult for Davis in this highly competitive tight-end unit.

Royce Newman, G

Royce Newman looked to have a promising career at guard after being drafted in 2021 by Green Bay. He played and started almost every game as a rookie and looked to have nailed down the starting spot for years to come.

Somehow though, his production dipped in the following years, and his snap count was limited. At the moment, it is looking more and more likely that Newman may not make the final cut, as Green Bay has other quality starters and younger players to fill the position.
