4 Players on the Roster Bubble for the San Francisco 49ers

Trent Taylor, San Francisco 49ers
Steve Roberts-USA TODAY Sports

Currently, the San Francisco 49ers have one of the most talented rosters in the NFL. This roster has great depth at nearly all positions, whether it is on offense or defense. It is also one of the main reasons for the 49ers’ recent success in making it deep into the playoffs.

However, with more competition, it also means that the coaching staff has a big problem on is hands while making a decision on the final 53-man roster. With training camp and preseason already underway, players will now have one last chance to shine as they try to fight their way into a spot on the team.

Naturally, that means some players are bound to get cut, and with the talent on hand in San Francisco, there could be a couple of surprises here and there.

Let us now take a look at four players on the roster bubble for the 49ers.

Trent Taylor, WR

The first player on this list is wide receiver Trent Taylor. The six-year veteran finds himself in the midst of a battle at the wide receiver position. The 49ers, in fact, possess arguably the most depth of all teams at this position with Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk, and Jauan Jennings taking the top three spots.

Adding to this talented trio is rookie wideout Ricky Pearsall, who is also expected to shine behind the starters. Moreover, Taylor’s snap count since 2018 has not even reached 20%, as per Spotrac.

Danny Gray, WR

Another wide receiver sailing in the same boat as Taylor is Danny Gray.

A big attribute of Gray is his speed, as he ran a 4.33 40-yard dash in 2022. However, his production over the first two seasons of his professional career has failed to impress.

As a matter of fact, Gray just has one career catch to show for himself. He will need to work very hard in order to make this roster that is already stacked with talent at the position.

Cameron Latu, TE

Tight end Cameron Latu is the next player on this list. The tight end room is headlined by four-time All-Pro George Kittle. Latu was taken in the third round of the 2023 draft and had a horrid time in training camp and preseason last year.

Latu’s rookie season in camp started with him dropping or not being able to hold onto the football. Just as things started to turn around for him, he suffered a season-ending knee injury. Being able to work his way up the depth chart is looking more and more difficult for 2024, as well.

Rock-Ya Sin, CB

The last player on the 49ers roster bubble is from the defensive side of the ball.

Cornerback Rock Ya-Sin looks to be set on losing out on a 53-man squad spot as, once again, San Francisco is heavily loaded in the secondary. The former second-round pick from Temple has played for three franchises in five years and finds himself in an uphill battle for a spot on this team.

The 49ers have around 16 players in their secondary, which means there are bound to be a few cuts. Players such as Charvarius Ward, Ambry Thomas, Deommodore Lenoir, and rookie Renardo Green are all a possible surety for the roster, leaving Ya-Sin to fight for one of the last remaining spots on the team’s defense.
